The stock Polaris CVT primary is a flyweight-engaged design: as RPM rises, flyweights force the sheaves together and the belt begins to drive. The weakness is at engagement — for a moment at every launch, the belt is squeezed between sheave faces that aren't yet at full pinch pressure, causing surface scrubbing, and flyweight engagement is inherently harsh. That scrubbing is brief but cumulative, and over thousands of launches it's what degrades belts. DuraClutch's architecture works differently: centrifugal clutches on the sheave faces act as the overrunning device between the shaft and the sheaves, which means constant belt pinch is maintained at all times — there is no initial scrubbing when the CVT starts shifting. In an overload condition at low-to-mid shift positions, the clutch slips before the belt does, protecting it from damage; at mid-to-high positions the system locks fully with zero performance loss at wide-open throttle. And because a one-way overrunning clutch rides on the main shaft, deceleration back-drives the crankshaft — giving the vehicle true engine braking on downhill terrain, using the engine's compression instead of your brake pads.
The RXL (large-diameter, for Ranger XP 1000 and Xpedition) delivers more than double the belt pinch force of stock and drops operating RPM for a more fuel-efficient, smoother-feeling drive. The RXS (standard diameter, for 1000cc SOHC Ranger, General, and RZR 1000) brings the same sealed roller technology to those platforms. The RXS R-Series (small-diameter sealed roller) covers the 900cc and smaller applications — Ranger 900, RZR 900, Ranger 570, and others. All three lines are fully tunable via flyweights and compression spring, and all three are sized to fit existing Polaris clutch covers without modification.
Q: What's the difference between the RXL, RXS, and RXS R-Series? Which do I need?
A: Platform and displacement drive the choice. The RXL is DuraClutch's newest, largest-diameter sealed roller clutch — built for the Ranger XP 1000 (MY18–26), Xpedition (MY24–26), and the newest RZR XP 1000 (MY24–26). The RXS is the standard-diameter sealed roller clutch — built for 1000cc platforms that use a different clutch housing than the XP 1000 (Ranger 1000 SOHC, General, RZR XP 1000 MY16–23, Ranger Diesel). The RXS R-Series is the small-diameter sealed roller line for 900cc and smaller machines (Ranger 900, RZR 900, Ranger 570, ACE) — tuned specifically to make smaller-displacement machines run smoother and last longer. Q: I want to upgrade but I'm not sure I need a full kit — can I just replace the primary?
A: DuraClutch makes primary-only kits (P suffix) for some platforms, notably the Northstar Ranger XP 1000 (15-605 series, $1,197). These are designed for owners who want to keep their existing secondary clutch. However, DuraClutch strongly recommends the full PS kit for most buyers — the included TEAM Tied Secondary is matched to the DuraClutch primary's engagement curve, and the combined system is what delivers the full improvement in belt life and engagement feel. If you already have a DuraClutch secondary from a previous kit, a primary-only kit may be appropriate — text us to confirm.
Q: Are DuraClutch kits worth the price compared to just buying a better belt?
A: A DuraClutch kit and a better belt solve different problems. A better belt (including DuraBelt) is more durable than OEM and will last longer under the same clutch conditions. But it doesn't change the engagement behavior — the initial scrubbing still happens, just on a tougher belt. The DuraClutch primary eliminates the scrubbing mechanism entirely, which is why most customers report the belt that comes in the kit lasts far longer than even premium belts did with their stock clutch. If your machine is a primary daily driver or a working UTV in demanding conditions, the kit pays for itself in reduced belt consumption and reduced downtime.
Q: How does DuraClutch's warranty work?
A: DuraClutch provides a 1-year limited warranty on the primary clutch, secondary clutch, and belt from date of purchase. This warranty is separate from the Polaris vehicle warranty and covers defects in materials and workmanship. It does not cover improper installation, oversized tires without gear reduction compensation, water damage, abnormal dust conditions without filtration, or use of a non-DuraClutch belt. The most notable warranty feature is the belt replacement guarantee: if the DuraBelt included in your kit fails within the first year under normal use, DuraClutch replaces it at no charge. Side by Side Source also offers extended 1- and 2-year warranties on DuraClutch products, available to add at checkout.
