New to MOLLE? Here’s the basic gist in one sentence: MOLLE is a complete, modular storage system that pairs specialized paneling (the pieces you see with all the square holes) and accessories to fit just about anything, anywhere. MOLLE webbing uses nylon sewn to panels or gear.
Hard panel MOLLE systems (laser-cut aluminum or polymer) use rows of slots that replicate MOLLE webbing functionality. Pouches designed for fabric MOLLE also work with hard panels, though some manufacturers make specific mounting hardware optimized for hard panels. Spacing standards for MOLLE are consistent across manufacturers—rows are typically 1.5 inches apart, and straps feed through in standardized patterns. This means pouches from one manufacturer work with panels from another, giving you huge flexibility in building your system.
Where you mount MOLLE panels dramatically affects functionality and access. Rear cab panels (behind seats on two-seat machines or behind the rear seat on crew cabs) provide maximum space and work well for items you need occasionally but not constantly—recovery gear, tools, spare parts. These are popular because they stay tucked out of the way while you’re riding, but still give you quick access to your gear when parked.
Other side-by-side MOLLE placement options include, but are not limited to:
As you can see, there are dozens of ways to set up your MOLLE system, each offering unique advantages in terms of giving you quick access to your equipment and allowing you to bring stuff that would otherwise be left behind.
If you thought the side-by-side MOLLE panel options available presented you with a ton of choices, just wait until you get to the pouches and other accessories! We’ll start with the first aid pouch. Having a first aid pouch accessible in a second or two can make a huge difference in the event of a serious injury. You’ll also be able to bring your tool pouches and rolls much more easily now, and without all that noisy clanking.
If you’re (justifiably) worried about your fancy tech getting damaged, you can protect your GPS unit, radio, and/or phone like never before while keeping them totally accessible with MOLLE pouches. The same goes for communication systems, bottle holders, general utility holders and more.
Best of all, this all moves around however and whenever you need it to. MOLLE is modular because they know that your needs adapt as life continues to throw curveballs at you. And that, fellow riders, is yet another reason we love MOLLE!
If I have MOLLE bags from military service, will these work too?
Yes indeed! MOLLE is standardized, so it should all pop right in.
What’s the weight limit on a MOLLE door panel?
The best practice here is to check with both your door and your mounting. Generally, you want to keep the total weight to under fifteen pounds. This will save your hinges.
Can I remove MOLLE pouches quickly if I need to reorganize or clean them?
MOLLE attachment is designed to be secure yet removable without tools. Some manufacturers make quick-release MOLLE attachments that snap on and off in seconds rather than requiring weaving—these sacrifice some security for convenience. For most applications, standard MOLLE attachment provides the right balance of security and removability.
